Biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging contributes to excellent compost from organic waste recycling, which is why it should be placed in the domestic wet waste collection. Disposing of them in the unsorted waste bin would be a waste of a resource.
Biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging can be recognised by the presence of logos printed on the finished product, issued by independent bodies, according to the parameters laid down in the relevant legislation. You only have to look carefully to spot both the logos and the words “biodegradable and compostable in accordance with UNI EN 13432”.
When you come home from the supermarket with your biodegradable plastic shopping bags, after emptying them, it is a good idea to keep them and use them later to collect organic household waste for separate collection. A simple gesture that will help biodegradable and compostable bioplastic return to nature in another guise, namely compost with which to fertilise the soil.
Biodegradable but not compostable plastics should not be ‘mixed’ with organic waste. Biodegradable plastics should in any case be disposed of in plastics or unsorted municipal waste.
