Is polyurethane toxic?

Polyurethane itself is not considered toxic. However, during the production and installation of polyurethane products, chemical components may be used that could be irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.

Therefore, it is important to take appropriate safety precautions when processing and using polyurethane.

During the production of polyurethane, isocyanates are used, which may be irritating to the skin and respiratory tract. During installation or processing of polyurethane foam, vapours may be emitted that may be irritating or cause allergic reactions in some sensitive persons.

However, it is important to emphasise that exposure to polyurethane chemicals can be minimised by taking appropriate safety precautions, such as the use of personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, goggles) and working in a well-ventilated area.

In addition, most polyurethane products intended for commercial or consumer use are manufactured in a way that limits the diffusion of harmful chemical components into the environment.
