What kind of shoe material is polyurethane?

Polyurethane (PU) is a material commonly used in the production of footwear. It can be found in different components of shoes, offering specific benefits to each part.

Here are some of the ways in which polyurethane is used in footwear:

Sole: Polyurethane soles are very popular due to their excellent properties. PU soles can be made in different densities to offer an excellent combination of comfort, wear resistance and grip.

They are known to be lightweight, flexible and shock-absorbent, allowing for good shock absorption during walking. PU soles can also have an anti-slip profile to improve traction on slippery surfaces.

Midsole: In sports and running shoes, the polyurethane midsole provides excellent cushioning and stability. It can be made in different densities and shapes to suit the specific support and comfort needs of the foot.

The PU midsole is able to absorb shock during physical activity, reducing stress on joints and improving responsiveness.

Footbed: Polyurethane is often used in the manufacture of insoles to provide additional comfort and support. PU insoles can provide customised cushioning, adapting to the shape of the foot over time.

They can distribute pressure evenly during walking and may also have antibacterial properties to prevent unpleasant odours.

Lining and upper: Polyurethane can also be used as a lining or for the construction of shoe uppers. It can provide water and weather resistance, protecting the feet from external moisture.

PU coating can be easy to clean and abrasion-resistant, improving the durability of footwear. In addition, it can be moulded or treated to provide different finishes and aesthetic designs.

In general, polyurethane in footwear offers a balance between comfort, cushioning, resistance and durability. Its versatility and customisable properties allow for the creation of shoes suitable for different activities and needs, ensuring a comfortable experience for the wearer.
