Is polyurethane carcinogenic?

In general, polyurethane is not considered a carcinogenic material. However, it is important to consider that safety depends on the type of polyurethane, its chemical composition and exposure to it.

Polyurethane is produced by the reaction of an isocyanate with a polyol. During this process, chemicals and vapours may be present that could be irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.

Therefore, during the processing and installation of polyurethane products, it is important to take appropriate safety precautions, such as the use of personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, goggles) and to work in a well-ventilated area.

Some types of isocyanates used in the production of polyurethane can be considered irritating to the skin and respiratory tract, and in some cases can cause an allergic reaction known as 'isocyanate asthma'.

However, the risk of exposure to these substances depends mainly on the industrial production process and professional use of polyurethane, rather than on the use of finished products containing polyurethane.

With regard to the use of finished polyurethane products, such as furniture or upholstery, when used under normal conditions, they are not considered carcinogenic. However, it is always advisable to follow the manufacturer's instructions and maintain good ventilation indoors to minimise exposure to any chemical vapours released by the materials.
