What are the thermal properties of polyurethanes?

Polyurethanes exhibit a range of thermal properties that may vary depending on chemical formulation, molecular structure and production process. 

Here is an overview of the main thermal properties of polyurethanes:

Glass transition temperature (Tg): The glass transition temperature is the temperature at which a polyurethane changes from a glassy, rigid state to a rubbery or elastic state. Flexible polyurethanes, for example, can have a lower Tg at room temperature, which gives them good flexibility and resilience even at low temperatures. 

On the other hand, rigid polyurethanes may have a higher Tg, making them less flexible at low temperatures.

Melting temperature: Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) can have a specific melting temperature. This means that, when subjected to sufficient heat, the polymer bonds will break and the material will become molten, allowing it to be processed and complex shapes to be created through moulding or extrusion. 

The melting temperature of TPUs can vary depending on their composition and desired characteristics.

Thermal stability: Polyurethanes can be thermally stable up to high temperatures, depending on their formulation and molecular structure. In general, polyurethanes are heat resistant and can maintain their mechanical and chemical properties at elevated temperatures. 

However, some polyurethane formulations may be sensitive to heat and degrade or undergo changes in their properties at elevated temperatures.

Thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of polyurethanes may vary depending on the type of polyurethane and its density. Rigid polyurethanes, for example, tend to have a lower thermal conductivity than flexible polyurethanes. 

This property causes polyurethanes to be used in thermal insulation applications, as they have the ability to retain heat or cold insulation as required.

Fire resistance: The fire resistance of polyurethanes can vary depending on their chemical composition and material modifications. Some polyurethanes may be fire resistant or may be treated with flame retardant additives to increase their resistance to heat and flames. 

However, it is important to note that polyurethanes can burn and can produce toxic fumes and gases when exposed to high temperatures or fire.
