how to tell if a plastic bag is biodegradable and compostable?

The marketing of single-use, biodegradable and compostable shopping bags is allowed, in compliance with the UNI EN 13432-2002 standard, as well as reusable ones (made of jute, fabric, polyethylene, polypropylene, non-woven fabric, cotton, net, paper), according to precise thickness requirements 200 micron, for bags with an external handle intended for food use; 100 micron, for bags with an external handle not intended for food use; 100 micron, for bags without external handles, if intended for food use (60 micron if not intended for food use). Compostable bags shall contain one of the following symbols:

Bags made of biodegradable plastic are "soggy" to the touch and are made from corn starch, potato starch or polyester. When looking at the bag, you should refer to the conformity marking of EN 13432:2002 and look for the phrase "Biodegradable product complying with EU legislation EN 13432" on the bag, which is usually displayed on the side or front. A second option is to look for the logos that attest to the certification of biodegradability such as "OK Compost" and "Compostable". These logos also have a code followed by a number (Sxxx or 7wxx) referring to each manufacturer, which must also ensure traceability. It should be noted that the ban does not currently apply to polyethylene bags used in the fruit and vegetable departments of various shops and markets, as they are not considered "take-away" bags but rather "protective" bags.
