PRSE 2026: 10th anniversary
The 10th edition of PRSE 2026 has officially come to a close in Amsterdam, confirming once again its role as the leading European platform for the plastics recycling industry. Held on MAY,5th-6th at the RAI Amsterdam, PRSE 2026 gathered the entire recycling value chain under one roof: recyclers, machinery manufacturers, packaging producers, technology providers, compounders, waste management specialists and brand owners.
According to the official organizers, PRSE 2026 was the largest edition ever, with more than 500 exhibitors and over 70 speakers participating across two conference theatres. The event also celebrated its 10th anniversary, highlighting how rapidly the plastics recycling industry has evolved over the past decade.
PRSE 2026 themes
The atmosphere at the RAI Amsterdam clearly showed that the plastics recycling industry is entering a new phase, in which operational efficiency, technological intelligence and strategic collaboration will determine future competitiveness.
One of the dominant themes throughout the exhibition was the growing economic pressure affecting European recyclers. During interviews conducted at the show, PRSE Global Events Director Matt Barber emphasized that the industry is currently navigating a particularly complex phase marked by volatile energy prices, unstable supply chains and the persistent competitiveness of virgin polymers versus recycled materials.
This economic context was visible in nearly every conference session and business conversation across the exhibition halls. While sustainability objectives and European regulations continue to drive demand for recycled plastics, many operators are struggling to maintain profitability in an increasingly challenging market environment. The implementation of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has been described as both a major opportunity and a critical operational challenge for the sector.
At the same time, PRSE 2026 demonstrated that innovation remains the key driver of resilience and competitiveness for the plastics recycling industry. Artificial intelligence, automation and digital traceability emerged as some of the most discussed topics during the two-day event
PRSE 2026 Innovation Hub
A dedicated AI Innovation Hub showcased next-generation solutions capable of transforming collection, sorting and material recovery processes. Among the technologies presented were advanced swarm-robot sorting systems and real-time AI-based material analysis tools designed to improve efficiency, purity and throughput in recycling operations.
The growing role of AI in plastics recycling reflects a broader industry shift toward smarter and more data-driven production systems. Exhibitors and speakers highlighted how digital technologies can help recyclers optimize operations, improve recycled material quality and support compliance with increasingly demanding regulatory frameworks.
Another key topic at PRSE 2026 was traceability. As recycled content targets become stricter across Europe, packaging producers and recyclers are under increasing pressure to provide transparent and verifiable information about recycled materials. Digital product passports, advanced tracking systems and recycled-content verification tools are therefore becoming strategic assets for the industry.
Optimism vs Realism into Plastics Recycling Market
The exhibition also revealed a significant evolution in market mentality compared with previous years. Industry experts noted that the sector is moving from a phase of “optimism” to one of “realism,” where scalability, profitability and compliance are becoming more important than ambitious announcements alone.
In this scenario, collaboration across the value chain emerged as one of the strongest messages of PRSE 2026. Speakers emphasized that recyclers, packaging manufacturers, brands, machinery suppliers and policymakers must work together to achieve practical and scalable circular economy solutions. According to the organizers, alignment between all stakeholders will be essential if Europe wants to achieve its long-term recycling and sustainability targets.
The conference programme reflected this multidimensional approach, combining discussions on legislation, material innovation, advanced recycling technologies and market development.
Sustainability – Performance Balance in Packaging
An important takeaway from the event was the increasing emphasis on “design for recycling.” Companies are investing more resources into packaging solutions that improve recyclability without compromising product performance or aesthetics. This trend is expected to accelerate further as PPWR implementation advances across Europe.
GIANECO’s point of view
Participating as exhibitor at this milestone edition, represented an important opportunity to meet international partners, strengthen relationships with customers and suppliers, and closely observe the technological and regulatory transformations currently reshaping the sector.
The event confirmed that despite current market difficulties, the recycling sector continues to evolve rapidly through innovation, technological integration and stronger industrial cooperation. As Europe accelerates its transition toward a more circular economy, events such as PRSE remain fundamental meeting points for companies committed to driving sustainable innovation forward. Gianeco is proud to have been part of this important international platform and looks forward to continuing its contribution to the development of smarter and more sustainable recycling solutions.
