is recycled plastic biodegradable?

Last updated on 30 July 2025

Only plastic recycled from the biodegradable waste is biodegradable. Conventional recycled plastics are not biodegradable like the same virgin conventional plastics. Most plastics are non-biodegradable mainly because fossil-based plastic is widely used because of its low cost, versatility and durability. This durability is partially based on plastic being an uncommon target for bacteria, which makes it non-biodegradable.
